Cassidy was pulled over by police after they spotted his Mercedes car weaving in and out of lanes in Fort Pierce, Florida, according to the police report obtained by the website TMZ. He told police he had a single glass of wine and had taken a painkiller pill.

A Highway Patrol officer had demanded the test after smelling alcohol on the star’s breath. He allegedly was found to be twice over the legal limit.
When police searched his car they found a half empty bottle of bourbon on the back seat.

Cassidy was arrested on charges of suspicion of driving under the influence, failure to maintain a single lane and having an open container. After spending almost eight hours in the police station he was released in the early hours of the morning after posting £200 bail.

Cassidy, who lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was one of the biggest stars of the 1970s. His spokesman denied that he was drink driving. “He would never jeopardise anyone on the road and he would not have been driving had he not had to go to a funeral,” said Jo Ann-Geffen. She said he would dispute the accuracy of the breathalyser tests.
