THE owner of a logistics transportation company was fined $70,000 on Monday over a fatal accident at Pasir Panjang Wharves two years ago. Steven Yen Tuck Hei, 49, pleaded guilty to failing to take measures to ensure the safety of his workers, which led to steel pipes rolling off a trailer and killing driver Koh Hong Son. As Yen could not afford to fork out the $70,000 fine, he had to serve a default two-month jail term. For his safety lapses, Yen could have been fined up to $200,000 and/or jailed for up to two years. Investigations showed that on Aug 1 2007, Yen had allowed workers to stack the steel pipes above the height of the barricades that were holding them. This caused the bundle to fall and crush Mr Koh, 53, to death when he was unloading them.
