Victorian police face pressure over Indian assault
THE Victorian Police are under pressure to explain why they failed to release details of an assault on four Indian men by an angry mob outside a nightspot in Melbourne's northern suburbs until four days after the attack.
Police yesterday confirmed four men had been arrested and interviewed in relation to assault and affray following the attack and released without charge. The statement was issued after the Times of India reported that members of Melbourne's Indian community had been “brutally bashed” by 70 locals.
At least two of the victims were treated in hospital for facial injuries. It is understood one of the men suffered a broken nose and jaw.
The newspaper this morning reports that the Indian government has asked its Melbourne consulate to investigate.
There had been no reporting of the assaults in the Australian media.
Gautam Gupta of the Federation of Indian Students of Australia accused the police of trying to cover up the attack.
“The whole system is try to keep these things under cover,” Mr Gupta told The Australian.
“They want to make this major issue into a minor incident. They want it swept under the carpet,” he said. Earlier this year a spate of assaults against Indian students triggered street protests in Melbourne and Sydney amid accusations of racism. Sensationalist reporting of the assaults in India tarnished the reputation of Australia's $15 billion international education industry and prompted a flurry of diplomatic activity and visits to repair the damage.
Details of the incident have emerged at a politically sensitive time for Victorian Premier John Brumby, who next week travels to India as part of ongoing efforts by Australian governments and universities to allay safety concerns among potential international students.
Police confirmed the group of Indians were subjected to racial abuse.
Acting Senior Sergeant Glenn Parker denied as many as 70 people had been involved. He told ABC Radio four men had been party to the assault and further 20 had been bystanders.
“While police were on scene they observed about 15 males and females, also from the larger group celebrating the birthday, make racist comments and one female from the group was seen to throw water over one bystander,” the police statement reads.
“After police removed the victims from the scene, the larger group continued with their threatening behaviour and racist remarks.”
