7 men and women hauled in for suspected loansharking activities
By Tham Yuen-C
SEVEN men and a woman were nabbed in the wee hours of Sunday during a police operation to smash illegal moneylending syndicates.
Aged between 26 and 37 years old, they are suspected to have been involved in loansharking activities.
Police found on them laptops, mobile phones, automated teller machine cards, transaction receipts, flyers and name cards used by the syndicate when they were arrested.
The seven were picked up around Singapore, including at Punggol, Bedok, Boon Lay, Sembawang, Clementi, Hougang and Woodlands.
In a press statement, Assistant Director of CID's Specialised Crime Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Goh Lam Kiong, said: 'Police will continue to crackdown on the multi-layers surrounding loansharking syndicates.
Those offenders facilitating such illicit businesses are mistaken if they think that they can evade detection.
Police are closely monitoring the tactics employed by the loansharks.
We will strike at them and ensure that they are prosecuted in court and face the full brunt of the law.'
