655 illegal hawkers found in first half of 2014: Grace Fu
SINGAPORE: Some 655 illegal hawkers were found in the first six months of this year, said Second Minister for the Environment and Resources Grace Fu in Parliament on Monday (July 7).
Of the 655 hawkers, two-thirds were foreigners, she added. Currently, offenders are fined up to S$500, while those convicted of the fourth and subsequent offences are prosecuted in court.
Ms Fu also mentioned that illegal foreign hawkers may be banned from entering Singapore.
"The financial circumstances of Singaporeans engaged in illegal hawking will be investigated. Where appropriate, they are referred to the Social Service Offices of the Ministry of Social and Family Development and Community Development Councils for job and financial assistance," she added. - CNA/do
