KUALA LUMPUR — Putrajaya is aware of a survey that shows 60 per cent of Malays are unhappy with the government and will address the situation, Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said.
“I have read the survey, I must take note because it is the rakyat’s opinion,” the Pandan MP told reporters after distributing mandarin oranges at a morning market in Taman Muda on Friday (Feb 1).
Dr Wan Azizah said Pakatan Harapan (PH) ministers were learning the “reality” of running the country after years of being in the opposition, and had to speed up their learning curve to take urgent steps to address Malay unhappiness.
She admitted it is a big challenge for the PH government to attempt to satisfy the demands of the various groups while trying to revive the economy at the same time.
“We have to take note and see how to balance (things), what we want to do and what is popular.
“Yet we also have to consider what the country needs, such as the economy, we have to take care of stability,” Dr Wan Azizah said.
She was commenting on the findings of a joint Ilham Centre and Penang Institute survey that nearly 60% of Malay respondents dissatisfied with the new government’s performance.
The survey covered 2,614 Malay respondents in the peninsula, Sabah and Sarawak and was conducted from late October to December last year.
A high number of respondents did not believe the government was serious about the Malay agenda, including upholding Malay rights and Islam as the official religion.
More than 60 per cent also believed non-Muslims were now in control of the government and that the PH component Democratic Action Party – a multiracial party with the second-most number of parliamentary seats in the coalition – was calling the shots in Putrajaya. THE MALAYSIAN INSIGHT
