I know of a couple in Penang who are in regular white collar jobs - engineer and school teacher - but live in a semi-detached house and own 2 cars. If they are working in S'pore, they would be staying in a HDB flat and relying on public transport.

There is a great deal of truth in that. I worked at a few publicly listed companies where I saw senior management come and go over the years. There was this Malaysian woman who was in middle management at one of my former companies, who stayed under the radar for decades while others around her were promoted and subsequently laid off because they cost too much. She was never promoted beyond mid-management, did the minimum, stayed low profile and escaped every round of lay offs till the age of 60. Younger and more capable colleagues got the boot in their 40s and 50s while she survived year after year.
