50% hike in US petrol, diesel tax proposed
A panel of US lawmakers has proposed increasing petrol and diesel fuel taxes by 50 percent to fund highway construction and repair in the US.
The 15-member National Commission on Surface Transportation Infrastructure Financing, is the second group in a year to call for higher fuel taxes.
It says motorists are driving less and buying less fuel.
The current 18.4 cents a gallon petrol tax and 24.4 cents a gallon diesel tax, are not enough to raise the needed funds for the government's road, bridge and transit programs.
Members of the commission are urging the US Congress to raise the petrol tax by 10 cents a gallon and the diesel fuel tax by 12 to 15 cents a gallon.
At the same time, the commission is recommending tying the fuel tax rates to inflation.
