5 held in bid to sell subsidised fuel
JOHOR BARU: The attempt by the skipper and four crew members of a fishing boat to sell 60,000 litres of subsidised fuel worth RM1.2 million to a foreign-registered vessel off the waters of Pengerang, here, was foiled by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) last Saturday.
Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency southern region nabbed a fishing boat transferring 60,000 litres of subsidised fuel to a vessel off Pengerang in Johor.
MMEA southern region chief Maritime First Admiral Adon Shalan said a MMEA patrol boat spotted the fishing boat behaving suspiciously at 11.45am, before conducting a raid on the boat.
The fuel was found in the boat's fish compartment.
Adon said the skipper and the four crew members, all locals, aged between 20 and 40, were arrested shortly after.
Adon said he believed that the suspects had been selling the subsidised fuel illegally for several months.
The boat was towed back to the MMEA jetty in Stulang Laut for further investigation and the case is being investigated under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 and Controlled Items Act 1961.
