5 H1N1-related deaths so far this year; CDC advises seasonal flu jabs

SINGAPORE: Experts said the current seasonal flu jab can protect against circulating strains, including the latest H1N1 virus despite five H1N1-related deaths so far this year.
The Communicable Disease Centre is advising the public to go for flu jabs with May and June being flu season.
The Health Ministry said the number of acute respiratory tract infections treated at polyclinics peaked to over 17,000 cases per week in April.
Of this, 37 per cent is caused by the H1N1 virus.
Family doctors are also treating more such cases of acute respiratory tract infections.
They said 35 per cent are children aged between three and eight years.
Dr John Soo, general practitioner, said: "When they come to school, one or two children fall sick and end up with the few other schoolmates picking up the virus and bring it home infecting their siblings, parents, as well as grandma, grandpa as well. So it spreads relatively quickly." - CNA/vm
