5.3 Quake Shakes Bengkulu
Residents of Bengkulu and surrounding areas of South Sumatra were shaken by a 5.3 earthquake on Monday night. Cracks and minor damage to buildings were reported.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the quake struck at 10:55 p.m local time with an epicenter 86 kilometers southeast of Bengkulu and 44 km deep. The earthquake did not trigger increased volcanic activity at South Sumatra's Dempo Volcano.
Residents ran out of buildings for safety. Some, traumatized by previous major quakes, chose to stay outside for a few hours.
Slamet, the head of the Dempo Volcano Monitoring Post in Bengkulu, said the earthquake measured 3 on the MMI (Mercalli Modified Intensity) scale.
“3 MMI means the tremor was strongly felt," Slamet told Metro TV, adding that the seismograph did not record any aftershocks.
Dempo is the highest mountain in South Sumatra, rising 3159 meters above sea level. It has erupted 20 times between 1818 and 2006. After the 2009 Padang earthquake, it registered increased activity but no eruptions.
