Vietnamese police said Monday they have recommended criminal charges against four people, including a Vietnamese-American, for armed robbery of 30 taels of gold from two jewelry shops last year.

In their recommendation to the People’s Procuracy in the central province of Binh Thuan, the local police also said the accused, led by 36-year-old Mark Joseph Nguyen, need to pay VND340 million (US$16,300) to their victims, including a local man whom they hit and killed with their car when fleeing.

On June 2 last year Nguyen, a drug criminal in the US who is wanted by Interpol, took Nguyen Phuoc Hai, 35, and Huynh Ngoc Thai, 24, to rob Hoang Kim gold shop in Bac Binh District.

They used a car stolen in Ho Chi Minh City and carried guns Nguyen had bought.

After stealing seven taels (a tael equals 37.5 gm) of gold, they burned down the car, police said.

On October 14 the trio along with Nguyen Bao Quoc, 33, robbed Thu Thanh gold shop on the same street and made away with more than 20 taels.

They attempted to flee in a rented car, but were chased by police and locals.

Nguyen dropped off Thai and Bao on the way and threw the gold into the Ly River.

He later lost control of the vehicle and crashed into Nguyen Nam, killing him on the spot. He and Hai were arrested immediately afterward.

Thai and Bao later turned themselves into the police, who recovered the gold from the river three months later.

36-year-old Mark Joseph Nguyen, a Vietnamese-American, will be indicted for robbing nearly 30 taels of gold with three others from two gold shops in the central province of Binh Thuan last year their car when fleeing.
