IPOH - Four robbers, believed to be responsible for at least 15 armed robberies in Kuala Kangsar, Sungai Siput, Taiping and, here, over the past few months, were killed in a shoot-out with police at Taman Meru 2C here early yesterday morning.

The four were shot less than 24 hours after they robbed their latest victims on Thursday.

Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said the shoot-out occurred at 2am after the robbers, believed to be foreigners, crashed their car in a dirt road after a 30-minute car chase with a police team.

"As the policemen approached the car, the driver and the robber in the front passenger seat got out and started shooting.

"At the same time, the other two robbers, armed with parang, alighted. A shoot-out ensued and all four suspects were killed. No identification documents were found on them."

Shukri said police seized a revolver, a pistol, three parang, a cutter, a crowbar, three laptops, three digital cameras, RM285(S$114), 78,000 rupiah (S$10.10), ¥569,000(S$9,000), two jade lockets and two wristwatches from the dead robbers.

Earlier, acting on a tip-off, a special police team set up to track the gang spotted them in a car in Meru, Jelapang.

"Police tried to flag them down for inspection but they sped off, which led to the chase." Shukri said initial investigations revealed that the registration number, WJD 4736, fitted on their car was false.

He said the gang's latest victims were a Japanese couple and their housemate who were robbed at their Meru Valley Golf Resort home on Thursday.

"The robbers, always clad in dark outfits, had also burgled a house in Puncak Meru on Aug 30."

The Japanese couple Shimizu Akira, 33, his wife Manami Shimizu, 33, and their housemate, Oya Shintaro, 20, thanked police for their quick action in hunting down the robbers.
