4 held for human smuggling
THREE illegal immigrants and their boatman were arrested on Sunday as they tried to enter Singapore from Malaysia. The Police Coast Guards and ICA officers detected an unlit speed boat off the coast of Pulau Ubin and intercepted it as it entered Singapore waters.
The boatman refused to stop despite several warnings. In an attempt to escape, he made a sharp turn at high speed that led to the boat capsizing, throwing its passengers into the water. The four subjects were rescued.
Officials detained a 28-year-old Malaysian and three Chinese nationals - a 37-year-old man, and two women, aged 28 and 34 - who did not have any valid travel documents. All four will be charged in court on Tuesday. The boatman will face three additional counts of engaging in the business of conveying prohibited immigrants.
