4 Chinese nationals face smuggling charges

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
Sunday, December 15, 2013

FOUR Chinese nationals were brought to the Magistrates’ Court yesterday to face the charge of smuggling 244 mobile phones into Brunei.

The three men, Li Aiguo, Liu Tianhang and Deng Guosheng and a woman, Tan Yinhuan, are each accused of smuggling the mobile phones and accessories into Brunei on Friday at the vicinity of Sungai Tujoh Control Post. The court document also stated that the defendants were in possession of 171 mobile phone accessories, namely chargers and batteries, and 25 pieces of sim card pin.

Deng Guosheng was also charged with possession of two cartons and five packets of untaxed cigarettes.

During the proceedings before Magistrate Harnita Zelda Skinner yesterday, the defendants’ respective charges were read by a Mandarin interpreter. However, no pleas were recorded as investigations are ongoing.

The prosecution told the magistrate that the defendants could not understand Malay or English and asked for a one-week adjournment.

Application for court bail has been submitted and denied as investigations are still ongoing.

All defendants are currently remanded at the Jerudong Prison pending a further mention of the case on December 19 at the Kuala Belait Magistrates’ Court.
