34 arrested in Vietnam telephone fraud ring

South Korean police said Sunday they had arrested 34 people in Vietnam for alleged involvement in telephone scams, local media reported.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said they cooperated with Vietnamese police to arrest 31 South Koreans, two Vietnamese and one Chinese for allegedly operating call centers to make random calls to South Korean citizens, according to Yonhap News Agency.
The gang members would then lure the South Korean citizens into transferring large sums of money into the gang’s bank accounts and offered to grant them loans or protect their deposits.
Some 490 million won (US$430,000) in total from 210 victims was siphoned off by the gang members between April and September this year, according to the report.
