Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield says three of the 15 people whose deaths are related to Covid-19 were fully vaccinated.

The Ministry of Health has revealed 10 out of the 15 people who have died in the Delta outbreak were unvaccinated.

Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said during the 1pm press conference on Wednesday the ministry would now be reporting the vaccination status of those who died.

Previously the ministry had said it would not disclose their vaccine status due to “privacy reasons”.

In the current Delta outbreak, 15 deaths had been recorded by the ministry to date, Bloomfield said. Ten of those people were unvaccinated, two had one dose less than 14 days before they contracted the virus, and three were fully vaccinated.

A Ministry of Health spokeswoman said there was clear evidence the Covid vaccine greatly reduced the likelihood people would end up in hospital or die from the virus.

Bloomfield reiterated that, as our vaccination rates rise, so too will the number of cases cropping up who have been fully vaccinated – simply by virtue of the numbers.

A British Medical Journal study reported last month, based on research carried out in Scotland, that the Pfizer vaccine was 90 per cent effective in preventing Covid deaths, the ministry said.

Forty-one people have died in New Zealand with Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic in 2020. The recent deaths have ranged in age from people in their 40s, up to some in their 90s.

On Wednesday there were 215 new cases of the virus. Of these, 181 are in Auckland, 18 in Waikato, three in Northland, 12 in Bay of Plenty and one in Canterbury, although that is a historical case.

Eighty-seven people are in hospital with Covid-19, eight of whom are in intensive-care or high-dependency care units.

Of those in hospital in the Northern Region, 47 cases (57 per cent) were unvaccinated or not eligible, due to their age.

2) Proportion (%) of cases ever critically ill in ICU or died, by age and vaccination status
3) Proportion (%) of cases ever requiring oxygen supplementation in general ward, unstable and under close monitoring in ICU, critically ill in ICU care or died, by age and vaccination status

For (1) and (2), you get less than 100% if you add up the individual percentages.
For (3), you get more than 100% if you add up the individual percentages.

And then for each of the tables in the row under "Total", the figure for "Partially Vaccinated" is always the highest, which raises the question: Why are partially vaccinated individuals more vulnerable than the unvaccinated?

10 out of 15 unvaccinated.
5 out of 15 had pre-existing conditions, hidden comorbidities, were already in poor health, were already old farts, had 'breakthrough infections'.
