31 new cases of locally transmitted Zika virus infection, including a pregnant woman

Of the 31, three cases are not linked to any existing cluster. They live in Tagore Avenue, Yishun Street 81 and Harvey Crescent. One of the cases confirmed today is pregnant; she is linked to the Aljunied Crescent/Sims Drive cluster. Her doctor is following up closely with her to provide support and counselling.

Another five cases were detected as a result of MOH’s look-back testing of previous cases. The look-back exercise is now completed. A total of 236 samples were taken, of which 52 tested positive, and 184 were negative.

I am curious what the procedure for testing Zika was prior to the outbreak.

Did patients have to pay for the test themselves? Was it expensive? I know it is very expensive even in Canada.

I am guessing Zika testing wasn't that common prior to the first case being reported. As such what you don't test you don't know. So it was already present in the population for a while? Even with the mandatory reporting it doesn't matter if you're not testing (because of cost). And because the assumption was Zika was only suspected in travelers from Central America testing indications were much lower. Doctors probably asked patients - have you traveled to Central America recently? And they said no and that was that no testing.

Only after the first locally transmitted case was reported then there was no more of that "looking for Zika only in travelers". Anyone could have Zika.

Now with the "free" tests we get more reporting of course.

They are never truthful, for money, they can do & sell anything.

Question nobody asked: The Aedes mosquito spread the ZIKA virus, it spread Dengue also. If an Aedes mosquito bites you, you get? Dengue or Zika? or it is like the coffee mix these days..TWO-IN-ONE?

That means, you get the Dengue, which is a much serious form plus the milder Zika which will appear later or not at all. The person bitten, will be a carrier for that virus right? Have they consider this? The mosquito, cannot to be traveling long distance from Rio or anywhere by plane, boat & train , right?

You will notice, in which they are trying hard to not, make you PANIC...is the ZIKA VIRUS comes from the foreigners, 1 Malaysian ( as so reported), 36 Bangladeshis , 21 China men or women? & how many others?. Most recent, you would suspect those coming in from ZIKA infected countries, & these would be, 1 Ang Moh at Wattern Estate ( have we forgotten about this?) who went or from South America.

So soon...we have the spread of this ZIKA from 3rd world countries workers, this mean that....the countries they come from, is heavily infected...how about the many Filipinos? Malaysians, Indonesians.....or even now, more & more Myanmar Nationals....these countries are known to have poor, hygiene, sanitation & health management.

The other thing would be....you see all the advertisement on TV, social media, Internet, posters, huge banners...that SAYS FIGHT & how how to keep the place clear of mosquitoes breeding...

Yet!...we have rise in Dengue, & now ZIKA?...what happened to the public education ? the fogging? the checks by NEA?...I know, soon, the minister will say...we are an equatorial climate, it rain very ofter & there are many holes, in which the mosquitoes can breed, we cannot check them all.....( like the long coast line excuse).

SINGAPORE: 31 new cases of locally transmitted Zika were confirmed on Thursday (Sep 1), including three cases not linked with any existing cluster, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) and National Environment Agency (NEA) in a joint statement.

These three patients live in Tagore Avenue in Upper Thomson, Yishun Street 81 and Harvey Crescent, which is in Simei.

Shortly before the new cases were identified, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong warned that Singapore "must assume Zika is elsewhere in (the country)" apart from Aljunied and Bedok, where the majority of cases so far have been.

An additional five cases were detected as a result of MOH’s look-back testing of previous cases. The authorities added that the look-back exercise is now completed. A total of 236 samples were taken, of which 52 tested positive, and 184 were negative.

Thursday's update brings the total number of locally transmitted Zika infections in Singapore to 151.

The new cases include the second pregnant woman in Singapore to be diagnosed with Zika. Like the first case, which was confirmed on Wednesday, the woman is living in the Sims Drive/Aljunied Crescent cluster, authorities said.
