30 stalls destroyed in Chow Kit fire
KUALA LUMPUR: A fire believed to be caused by a short circuit destroyed 30 stalls at the Chow Kit wet market last night. The market, with over 300 stalls, was plunged into darkness with several explosions heard. Firemen in action had near misses as well. “An ice box containing beef exploded near where my men were standing but fortunately no one was injured in that incident,” said Federal Territory Fire and Rescue Department assistant director Azizan Ismail. He added the department received a distress call at 9pm.

“The first fire engine arrived at the scene at 9.04pm. “The fire was brought under control by 9.30pm,” said Azizan, adding that 54 firemen and nine fire engines were used to combat the fire. Among the stalls destroyed were those selling meat, clothes, herbs, and grocery items. The total losses are estimated at tens of thousands of ringgit. It is learnt that a fire had also damaged the front end of the wet market in 2007.
