The CPF Board uncovered about 3,000 employers who underpaid or did not pay CPF for around 7,500 employees last year. This has led to the recovery of about $30.4 million in unpaid CPF from these employers.

Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong said, in response to queries from Nominated Member of Parliament Terry Lee, said that in 2009, there were 5,733 employers who owed CPF for at least two consecutive months.

As of December last year, most have paid up their arrears, with only 573 owing a total of $3.3 million in outstanding CPF contribution, affecting 3,500 employees.Such employers often cite poor business or cash flow problems as reasons for failing to pay CPF on time.

Mr Gan said: "The CPF Board regularly conducts briefings and seminars for both employers and employees to help them better understand their rights and obligations."

Tripartite efforts have allowed 24,000 informal workers to be converted to formal employment, entitling them to CPF contributions.
