SINGAPORE - The police have arrested three women, aged 20, 23 and 24 respectively, for cheating and criminal breach of trust (CBT) of a handphone.
One of the trio had lured a victim to a shopping centre in Orchard on Nov 1 this year after chatting with him on a social media website.
The women plotted to obtain his credit card details and steal his $1,200 handphone. They met at an entertainment outlet in the shopping centre.
When the victim paid the bill using his credit card, the trio worked together to distract him while one of them took down the credit card details.
The 24-year-old suspect then asked to borrow the victim's handphone while the other two women left.
A bag was left behind as collateral by the woman while she went away to make the purported call.
The trio never returned and the bag contained nothing of importance. The victim lodged a police report the following day.
Investigations also revealed that several unauthorised transactions were made using the victim's credit card that day.
Police officers conducted extensive enquiries and established the identities of the trio. They mounted an operation and arrested the trio in Toa Payoh and Geylang on Nov 5.
Investigations against the trio are ongoing for offences of cheating and CBT of the handphone.
The offence of cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, is punishable with an imprisonment term which may extend to 10 years and shall also be liable to a fine.
The offence of CBT under Section 406 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, is punishable with an imprisonment term which may extend to 7 years, or with fine, or with both.
Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Keok Tong San, commended his officers for their policing work.
