Sky tower stuck, 36 stranded
By Carolyn Quek & Jessica Lim

A MECHANICAL fault with the Tiger Sky Tower attraction on Sentosa Friday afternoon left 36 guests, including three elderly people and eight children, stranded 30m in the air for more than two hours.

The Sky Tower, introduced in 2004, reaches 110m into the sky. It ferries up to 72 passengers to the top via an enclosed, air-conditioned cabin, also known as a gondola. The seven-minute ride affords them commanding views of Sentosa, Singapore, the Southern Islands and parts of Indonesia and Malaysia. Running from 9am to 9pm, it averages about 60 rides daily.

In a joint press statement on Friday night, the attraction's operator Sky Tower, Sentosa Leisure Group - which runs the daily operations of the tower - and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said the fault had occurred at 12.15pm. The passengers were finally brought down at 2.40pm. No injuries were reported.

The revolving gondola was on its way down, five minutes into the seven-minute ride, when it stalled. A Sentosa Leisure Group employee who operates the ride from inside the cabin then contacted the ground staff.

While ground staff tried resetting the ride, engineers made their way up the tower to try and rectify the problem. But when it took longer than the time stipulated in the Sky Tower's emergency plan, the authorities were called in. The SCDF and police reached the scene slightly after 1pm.

The SCDF deployed a team of eight elite Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (Dart) personnel. While three officers were put on standby, five Dart officers climbed up the tower via a ladder inside it.

Said Sky Tower assistant general manager Lee Su Wei: '(The passengers) were slightly shaken but most of them were fine.' Bottled water and biscuits, already kept inside the cabin in case of emergencies, were distributed. Other emergency supplies, such as portable toilets, first aid kits and drawing books were also available. The ride was eventually restarted after more than two hours.

36 stuck for about 2.5 hours in Sentosa gondola due to mechanical fault

SINGAPORE : Thirty—six people were stuck for about two—and—a—half hours in a gondola of Tiger Sky Tower on Sentosa’s Imbiah Lookout due to a mechanical fault on Friday afternoon.

Operations at the Tower were suspended at about 12.15pm, with 36 guests — including three elderly persons and eight children — in the gondola 30 metres high.

An attractions host accompanying the ride maintained communications with personnel on the ground via a walkie—talkie throughout and provided updates to the guests.

Biscuits and bottles of water stored in the gondola in case of emergency were distributed to the guests, as engineers from Sky Tower Pte Ltd and Singapore Civil Defence Force personnel worked to lower the gondola.

Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team personnel were deployed to the gondola to assure the affected guests, while another team was deployed to assist the engineers in lowering the gondola to ground level.

All of the guests were safely brought down to the ground level by 2.40pm.

No one was injured.

The cause of the fault is still under investigation, but the Sky Tower will re—open soon. — CNA/ms

Fined for mischief at Flyer

A MAN who caused about $5,000 worth of damage to the Singapore Flyer's property was fined $4,000 on Tuesday.

Property agent Aaron Lim Heng Shin, 32, pleaded guilty to committing mischief by damaging a fire intercom glass panel and three emergency call point glass panels at the Raffles Avenue premises on Feb 10.

A Community Court heard that Lim was spotted on CCTV cameras loitering at Level 3 of the Singapore Flyer and damaging the fire intercom glass panel with his hand at about 6am that day. He was arrested.

Lim's lawyer, Mr Lim Hin Chye, said his client was devastated when his wife took out divorce proceedings against him and left with their two young children whom he loved dearly last October.

Because of his psychotic past, he went into a state of severe depression, and indulged in drugs and alcohol. On the day of the incident, the lawyer said Lim's muddled mind caused him to think that his family was at the Singapore Flyer where the offences occurred.

Lim, who is currently on medication, has made full restitution of $5,013 for the damage caused. He could have been jailed for up to two years and fined for mischief.
