First, they were suprised to find the book in the kitchen, ah ma might had picked it up while she was rumaging the dustbins for soft drinks cans, & saw LKY face and his name.

Second, like I had said people leave 'hoon kee', newspaper, periodicals, playboy, books like those love stories the ladies like to read...for emergency on way to toliet...the book is most likely to balance the bum on the stoop down type of toliet...

Thirdly and lastly...ah ma is veri intellectual..she reads the memoirs of a geisha..sorry opps! LEE KUAN YEW, while she stirs her fish congee...

Most likely the book given free to Ah Ma by some RC doggie lah. But Ah Ma is illiterate and some more scared to dump it in the bin in case some secret police trace it to her. So no choice, Ah Ma put the book in the kitchen to:

1) Scare off the cockroaches, spiders, lizards and rats
2) Use it as a place mat to protect the tabletop
3) Rip pages from it to use as fuel for cooking
4) Prop up the refrigerator to clean underneath it

At her age after spending her entire life slogging for the old man, she should be in retirement, smelling roses, taking free bus/MRT rides to see the country she had helped build. Not cramped into her puny rented flat and can only get a book to prop up her un-balanced stove to cook her plain porridge, while some familees employ famous chefs to cook up a storm for their familee dinner using the top grade ingredients.
