PEKAN - A fun-filled weekend outing turned tragic for four friends when three of them were killed in an accident early yesterday morning.
Driver Shahrul Azwan Jaafar Shah and Mohd Faqih Mohd Nor, both 18, and Mohd Hasroy Haniff Hamsah, 17, died at the scene after the car skidded and crashed into a road divider at Km29.5 of the Kuantan-Pekan dual carriageway, near Kampung Ubai about 12.45am.
Their friend, Mohd Hasri Razali, 19, who escaped with minor injuries, has been warded at Pekan Hospital here.
State police administration and traffic enforcement officer Assistant Superintendent Zainalabidin Othman said the victims were childhood friends and were heading to Kuantan when the accident happened.
He said initial investigations showed the car was speeding along the stretch and attempted to overtake another vehicle when the driver lost control and hit the divider.
"The impact of the crash threw all four victims out of the vehicle.
"Three died of extensive injuries at the scene while another escaped with minor injuries."
He said villagers from nearby settlements and passers-by stopped to help the victims.
The bodies were sent to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital in Kuantan for post-mortem.
Hassan Ali, 48, from Kampung Ubai here, said he saw the victim's Proton Wira trailing a Perodua Myvi at top speed along the stretch before overtaking a hearse.
"The Proton driver must have failed to notice a sharp bend ahead and lost control before ramming into the road divider.
"The car spun several times and all four passengers were flung out of the vehicle."
Hasroy's father, Hamsah Marto, said his son was scheduled to sit the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination today.
The 60-year-old former security guard said his son, the youngest of six children, had studied hard for the exams.
"It is heartbreaking but I will have to accept his death as fated.
"All four of them lived nearby and would usually travel to Kuantan during the weekends."
