<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"-->MORE than 3,000 active and national servicemen pledged to guard Singapore's independence with their lives on Wednesday.
The military's top brass, including Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Desmond Kuek and the chiefs of the army, air force and navy, led the soldiers to recite the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) pledge to reaffirm their loyalty and commitment to the nation's defence at the Safti Military Institute.
Those present included President SR Nathan, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean and Second Minister for Defence Ng Eng Hen, who is also the Education Minister.
The parade also honoured those who lost their lives in service. As a mark of respect, those present bowed their heads in silence for one minute.
The SAF's best units were honoured, with the 1st Commando Battalion - this year's Best Combat Unit - receiving the State Colours from President Nathan. DPM Teo also presented awards to 22 units.
Earlier in the day, over 850 NSmen and their employers took part in four re-dedication ceremonies held around Singapore.
In his SAF day message, Mr Teo said the SAF remained the 'ultimate guarantor of the peace, security and prosperity that Singapore enjoys.'
He also thanked all Singaporeans for their support in national service and the sacrifices they have made so that the national servicemen can carry out their duties.
'During difficult economic times, this support is even more important. This spirit of unity and solidarity will enable us to overcome any difficulties and come out stronger.'

Every year, it's a wayang show on this thingy and after 20 yrs, white scum will proclaim that the thingy has been going on for a long time.

But whatever "noises" on the ground now are ignored.

A couple of years ago when I was doing my reservist, we had a questionaire. One of the questions was "would you die for your country" or some such shit.

I looked around and everyone around me marked YES. Yet, these were the same people who complained and complained about pap, govt, saf etc. So, is it a true representation of what they feel in their hearts?

I indicated NO in my questionaire.

Oh I thought these 3,000 were the big earners; scholars, brigadeers,..

I'm surprise you did not choose the 'politically' correct answer. They might have given you some extras for being too honest

I thought you were stylish and wrote: would my country die for me instead? Hahahahhahaa

Out of the 3000, one died yesterday, after a Land Rover rolled back and crushed him. Now SAF is depending on the remaining 2999 soldiers.

Maybe the question should be:

"Would you be prepared to fight and die for this current government?"

I don't think the SAF has anything to do with the country anymore. The SAF serves the PAP. In a perfect world, the military would be independent of the government. Not in Singapore. So to fight and die in the SAF is to fight and die for the PAP.

Would I be prepared to do that?

The answer is No and I have no qualms about stating it in any survey.

Why would anyone die for Spore Inc.

Its no wonder many parents are trying to leave with their sons.

PAP has made it clear its a bizness & not a country. Won't be surprised then the PAP turn to foreign labor to fill the NS ranks

You are wrong. You spastic ridiculous idealist, in which country does the military serve independently of the government? The United States?

You should know who makes their paychecks before you open your fucking mouth.

Hahaha you mean mercenaries? Oh Sporns will be grateful when that happens.

FT soldiers with temporary red passports and HAHAHAHHAHA. What color or colour should we propose for a temporary citizen card? Brown?

I am willing to die for Singaporean but not for Singapore. To understand the difference between these two will make us more willing to serve "national" service. This Singapore no long belongs to Singaporean because pap has made us a 2nd class citizen. No point fighting to save Singapore.

Pink is a nice color

I don't think there will be enough Sporeans to care when mercenaries become the norm. CISCO can take over guarding the PAP assets, I think they already hire foreigners.

However CISCO will have to pay the market rate instead of the pittance NS guys are getting.
