PADANG BESAR: Twenty-six immigrants, including eight children, were detained in four separate operations carried out by the Anti-Smuggling Unit (UPP) in the district here within the last four days for illegally entering the country.

The immigrants comprised 25 Myanmar nationals and a Bangladeshi. They were aged between 11 and 36.

Chuping UPP commander Assistant Superintendent Syed Basri Syed Ali said the team arrested 10 illegal immigrants in two separate raids about 7pm at Kampung Guar Medang Gatal, near here, and Kampung Kubang Perun, Chuping, on Monday.

"We had first detained a man, which then led to the arrest of nine other people in Kampung Kubang Perun," he said.

He added that on the following day (Tuesday), the team nabbed another immigrant about 10am.

Another 15 were arrested at 3.30am yesterday near a rubber estate at Km19 Jalan Padang Besar- Ulu Pauh, near here.

Basri said all of the detained did not have valid documents to enter the country.

He added that it was believed that the illegal immigrants had traveled from Myanmar to Satun province in Thailand by boat before making their way illegally into the country across the Malaysia-Thailand border here.

"We also believe that they had walked from Satun into Malaysia.

"The journey took them about four days."
