At least 26 people have died so far in a diarrhea outbreak in India's eastern coastal state of Orissa, the state health minister said.
Prasanna Acharya said the deaths occurred in several villages in the Kalahandi district, the BBC reported. Local media reports said the disease has claimed 38 lives.
Officials said more than 200 people suffering from diarrhea have so far been admitted to hospitals. A team of doctors from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases has arrived in the state to determine the causes of the outbreak, the report said.
Diarrhea, a major killer, reportedly accounts for 4 percent of all deaths in the world. Infection results mostly from contaminated food or drinking water, and from poor hygienic conditions, the report said.
