26 arrested for overstaying in Singapore: ICA

29 people were arrested for various offences on Tuesday, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said in a statement on Wednesday.

Of those arrested, 26 were found to be overstayers in Singapore. They are aged between 26 and 62 years old, and most of them are from China and India.

Meanwhile, a work permit holder was arrested for possessing duty-unpaid cigarettes.

Two others were arrested for harbouring offences.

ICA said that investigations are ongoing.

Those found guilty of overstaying or illegal entry will face a jail term of up to six months and at least three strokes of the cane, while those convicted of illegal departure will face a fine of up to $2,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both.

Homeowners are also reminded to check the status of their prospective foreign tenants to ensure that their status in Singapore is legal.

Those who wish to rent their premises to foreigners must conduct these three checks:

- Check his/her original immigration/work pass

- Cross check the particulars on his/her pass against the particulars on his/her original passport

- Verify the validity of his/her pass by checking with the issuing authority

A homeowner found guilty of recklessly or knowingly harbouring overstayers and/or illegal immigrants will face a jail term between six months and two years, and a maximum fine of $6,000, while a homeowner found guilty of negligently harbouring overstayers and/or illegal immigrants will face a maximum jail term of one year, a maximum fine of $6,000, or both.
