However, the 23-year-old woman not only drank and chatted with male customers - but also exposed her breasts and touched their private parts.
Her illegal activities were discovered after police conducted a spot check on the pub, Fields Avenue Entertainment, on Sept 4.
The police also found that the woman's details were not recorded in the staff record book, as required by the Public Entertainments and Meetings Act.
Yesterday, Lau Wee Chiah, 25, was fined $12,000 in a district court for allowing the Filipina to work illegally as a hostess, not maintaining proper records of her employment and allowing her to carry out immoral activities at the venue.
He also pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to ensure that his pub was not overcrowded. There were 62 patrons in his pub on the evening of the police check. His public entertainment licence was for 54 persons.
The court also ordered Lau to pay a levy of $32 to the Ministry of Manpower for the four days the woman worked at the pub.
The prosecution submitted to the court that the immoral actions of the hostess were part of a 'disturbing trend'.
The submission said: 'Left unquelled, it will have far reaching social implications, resulting in the proliferation of social ills, such as adultery and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.'
However, Lau's lawyer Christopher Bridges pointed out that there was no proof that such activities would result in a rise in adultery as there was no evidence that all the patrons were married. 'It is a quantum leap in logic to say that a Filipina exposing her breasts and groping the crotches of male patrons will lead to sex, and that the sex will be unprotected, and that patrons will have sexually transmitted diseases,' he told the court.
