21 nabbed for illegal betting

SINGAPORE: Police have arrested 21 people in an island-wide operation targeting illegal betting activities.
The operation was led by police officers from the Criminal Investigation Department and the Police Intelligence Department.
Simultaneous raids were conducted in Serangoon, Yishun, Choa Chu Kang, West Coast, Bukit Batok, Bukit Panjang and Sembawang.
Cash of about S$250,000, 25 mobile phones, 10 computers, 13 fax machines and notebooks and pieces of paper with illegal betting entries were seized in the course of the operation.
Police said investigations against the suspects are ongoing.
Under the Common Gaming Houses Act, anyone who places bets on an illegal public lottery is liable on conviction to a fine of up to S$5,000, imprisonment of up to six months or both.
Anyone who is found to have assisted in the carrying on of an illegal public lottery is liable on conviction to a fine of between S$20,000 and S$200,000, and shall also be liable to imprisonment of up to five years.
