21 fired over stolen engine
KUALA LUMPUR - A BRIGADIER-GENERAL and about 20 other armed forces personnel have been sacked over their alleged involvement in the theft of a RM50 million (S$20 million) fighter jet engine, local media reported on Monday. The brigadier-general was a department head, a source told the New Straits Times. He is believed to have retained his pension and other retirement benefits. Some of those sacked lost their pensions and other benefits as former servicemen, said the newspaper. Some had to opt for early retirement. The air force took disciplinary action against the men late last year following an internal inquiry. The security breach occurred more than a year ago while the engine was undergoing repairs, but became public knowledge only when the New Straits Times reported it last Saturday, citing information from unidentified officials. Last Friday, the armed forces chief, General Azizan Ariffin told the New Straits Times that the missing engine might be just the 'tip of the iceberg' as initial probes indicated that other military equipment might have been missing since 2007.
