Nine inmates were killed, 14 were injured, and dozens escaped in a prison riot on Monday, national news media reported, in the latest example of Brazil’s continuing difficulties maintaining control over its notoriously violent penal system.

According to newspaper O Estado de São Paulo, 106 prisoners escaped the prison in the city of Goiânia, near the capital of Brasilia. Authorities recaptured 27 of the escapees, but the rest remained at large.

One of the nine killed in the mayhem was decapitated, news media reported, sparking memories of a prison riot that occurred one year ago today in the Amazon in which 56 people died, several of whom were decapitated and thrown over prison walls.

That riot, which was rooted in a long-standing gang rivalry, came at the beginning of a January marred by widespread prison violence, with 130 prisoners dying in the first 20 days of 2017.

Brazil’s prisons, which suffer endemic violence, are often severely overcrowded. Rights group call prison conditions medieval, with food scarce and cells often so packed inmates have no space to lie down.

In comments on Monday to newspaper Folha de São Paulo, the head of Brazil’s prison guard union, Jorimar Bastos, criticized the amount of resources allocated for oversight at the Goiânia prison, saying only five guards were assigned to watch over 900 prisoners.

Surely this is a good thing as it reduces the prison population and saves taxpayer funds which can be redirected to more productive pursuits.

2018 is a truly year for freedom. 1st January 2018. Recreational pot becomes legal in California. July 1st 2018. Same thing happens for Canada. It becomes legal across the federal provinces. You won't go to jail for smoking a joint or possession. Whoopee!

Cheers!

yeah, long lines at shops selling pot. sales will be up 6.9 times in 2018, but no banks want to deal with the money as all banks need to be federally regulated and insured. will resort to underground and virtual banking.

Banks don,t want the money? Haha. There's been a jump in investments into the newly established pot industries. All of the listed pot companies are seeing a spike in their stock values. The largest growth will come from the edibles sector of the market. My brother (a chef) has been proposed numerous times to start a business in marijuana edibles, the only problem is that he doesn;t know anything about pot. There is tremendous demand for people with knowledge in the industry. There just isn't sufficient personnel in it (with legal experience). Banks just happen to be a conservative lot, Once they sense they're left out of the market, they'll want to jump in. Its the fastest growing industry in North America now (refer to Time and Newsweek magazines).

Cheers!

What you still doing in sinkieland?

Come back to Canada and find work in the new pot industry lah!

Am in Toronto now. For a while. My employers in Singapore are requesting I go back to work. Am thinking about it. This is one cold winter. But I suppose the weather is something I have to accept. Cold in canada, hot and humid in Singapore. Can't win. How to get work in the pot industry? What kind of experience? All I know is getting stoned!

Cheers!

knn. walking around with puppy at santana row and we smell pot everywhere, in and out of stores. these smokers must know that the 15-ft no-smoking rule still applies for all shops, balconies, walkways and corridors. my puppy can’t take it anymore. knnbccb!

I think there are pot products for pets. Lucky pooches can get THC infused biscuits and doggie bones. Give a treat to your puppy!

Cheer!
