• Democratic Institutions – transparent and accountable governing institutions that promote economic growth

• Health – the physical well-being of the populace
• Personal Freedom – the degree to which individuals can choose the course of their lives
• Security – a safe environment in which people can pursue opportunity
• Social Capital – trustworthiness in relationships and strong communities

How the index is constructed

The Prosperity Index accounts for 90 percent of the world’s population, using a combination of objective data and subjective responses to surveys. This data comprises 79 different variables, and each is then distilled into one of the nine different sub-indexes identified as a foundation of prosperity. A country’s performance in each sub-index is given a score, and the overall Prosperity Index rankings are produced by averaging the equally-weighted scores of the 9 subindexes
for each country.

Those countries that perform well across each sub-index score highest
in the overall rankings.

INDIA MORE PROSPEROUS THAN CHINA, FINDS LEGATUM PROSPERITY INDEX

LONDON, October 26, 2009 – The third edition of the Legatum Prosperity Index, published today, ranks 104 countries (covering 90% of the world’s population), based on a definition of prosperity that combines economic growth together with
measures of happiness and quality of life.

According to this year’s Legatum Prosperity Index, India ranks 45th in the world, slightly behind emerging giant Brazil (41st) but well ahead of China (75th).

Although outperformed by China on several economic indicators, India’s superior overall ranking is achieved through its performance in the critical non-economic factors such as personal freedom which encompasses freedom of speech and religion, national tolerance for immigrants and ethnic and racial minorities and for which India ranks 47th globally compared to China’s 91st place.

India also ranks highly on measures of social capital, reflected in the percentage of citizens who volunteer, give to charity, help strangers, and who feel they can rely on family and friends. In this area, India ranks fifth in the world, ahead of the US, the UK and Finland.

“India is a classic example of a country whose prosperity stems largely from its social capital and quality of life rather than its performance on the purely economic measures.

Although China outperforms India on several economic indicators,
India is 30 places higher in the final rankings because of China’s poor levels of personal freedom and democracy,” said Dr. William Inboden, Senior Vice President of the Legatum Institute. “However, there are some areas of concern for India,
particularly in the quality of healthcare and education for which India ranks 88th and 86th respectively,” concluded Dr. Inboden.

Britain lures talent: sci-tech entrepreneurs move in

http://www.chinapost.com.tw/business/europe/2010/01/18/241294/Britain-lures.htm

Around 100 have in the past five years picked the country as a hub: in global migration terms they are a trickle, but are nonetheless countering a “brain drain” of talent symbolized 20 years ago by the departure to Switzerland of the inventor of the World Wide Web.

Tim Berners-Lee, a graduate of Oxford University, had to move to Geneva to access the largest internet node in Europe, at the CERN physics laboratory.

In response to a set of policies put in place a decade after he left, data from the British government's department for trade and investment (UKTI) now show new businesses from such countries as the United States (U.S.), South Korea and Israel have also relocated or set up new headquarters in Britain.

The pace has accelerated: nine new foreign entrepreneurs came in 2005/2006, followed by another 10 in 2006/2007, then 22 in 2007/2008, 28 in 2008/2009 and another 30 in the first nine months of 2009/2010.

Jean-Christophe Dumont, a migration expert at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), said the UK is now well placed in Europe on a number of indexes measuring factors like taxes, red tape, the dynamics of internal markets and how they are connected on the world stage, and the ability to access a qualified work force.

“It's not really a surprise to see that the UK has been able to attract a significant number of these people,” he told Reuters.

Seeing Britain's success, he added, such countries as France and Japan have recently drawn up policies to attract foreign entrepreneurs or wealthy investors who might plough large sums into job-creating businesses and boost economies.

According to the Legatum Institute, an investment-led think tank which ranks 104 nations on a Prosperity Index of a variety of business and social measures, Britain is second only to the U.S. for entrepreneurship and innovation — ahead of Canada, Sweden and the Netherlands.

“The best thing that Britain does at the moment is to provide an infrastructure for small and medium-sized businesses to grow and reach not just the UK, but Europe, the U.S. and the rest of the world,” said Gal, the Romanian entrepreneur.

Sg is at #23 but fail social capital, personal freedom and democratic institutions

The fact that they've actually placed India on top of China proves that the list is very much Bullshit. They put way too much weight on Freedom and democracy and seriously overrated India in Governance. Anyone who has worked in and worked with both this countries will probably tell U otherwise

And if no one believes me, just look at the comments on SG

Entrepreneurship and Innovation - Ranked 11th <- lol!!!! Nuff Said!!!

Personal Freedom - Ranked 64th
ver 80% of the population believe the country to be a desirable destination for ethnic minorities and immigrants.(Someone should ask them to visit this forum)

SG scores well on good governance compared with so many countries around the world. IMO the concept of entrepreneurship and innovation does not have to be that a country must have Iphone inventors or fortune 500 companies. It could be just as well small ventures as well, which SG has many.

What would you like to say next ?. Those people at Legatum Institute are crazy nut crackers with purple blinkers warped around their heads ?

Is this they study that interviews Indian managers about future of India ? If so then quite bogus.

If you want to get good results, interview the CEO of MNCs. If CEO is positive they will decide to invest in the country. action speaks louder then words.

Such articles is great for driving up traffic. In a slow day easy to serve up old dishes.
