GEORGE TOWN - A group of some 200 unhappy residents in Taman Melati Jaya held a protest this morning over a move that has redirected the traffic flow in their housing area.

After a triangular island was built at the junction leading into their residential area a month ago on Persiaran Mahsuri, the people could no longer go home without taking a long detour.

Resident Siti Zauyah Samat, 40, said it used to take less than three minutes to get home from the Bayan Baru town but now it took 15 minutes.

"If we are coming home from the market nearby, we have to go all the way to the Bukit Jambul roundabout, turn into Jalan Tun Dr Awang and then back to Persiaran Mahsuri.

"We cannot use the old Jalan Mahsuri way that was much shorter because the island at the junction bars motorists on Persiaran Mahsuri from turning right into Taman Melati Jaya," she told reporters at the protest.

Taman Melati Jaya is in the same neighbourhood as the Penang International Sports Arena, which is now being upgraded into the Subterranean Penang International Convention and Exhibition Centre (sPICE), and the Penang Development Corporation (PDC).
