20 arrested in vice raids over two days

Posted: 01 March 2012 0349 hrs

SINGAPORE: Police said they arrested 11 people on Tuesday night for vice-related activities and trespassing on state land.

Acting on a tip-off, officers from the Jurong Police Division raided the forested area off Woodlands Avenue 4 and nabbed the 11, who are of various nationalities.

Police said seven of those arrested are men, aged between 23 and 39, while the four women are aged between 22 and 30.

Investigations against all the suspects are ongoing.

In a separate 12-hour operation which ended on Wednesday evening, police said they successfully crippled an online vice syndicate and arrested nine people for suspected involvement in vice-related activities.

Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Police Intelligence Department (PID) conducted simultaneous raids at various locations such as Balestier, Bukit Purmei and Lengkok Bahru. Police said the crackdown also led officers to a location in the vicinity of Keong Saik Street, believed to have been used as a brothel by the syndicate.

In all, four men and five women aged between 29 and 49 years old were arrested for vice-related offences.

Police said the syndicate is believed to have advertised via internet websites, where potential customers could book its services.

Cash, bank books, ATM cards, handphones and transaction records were also seized in the operation.

Investigations against all the suspects are ongoing.

Police said the raid was part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on vice activities and warn that those who conduct such illicit activities will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
