GEORGE TOWN, PENANG - Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has assured Penangites that at least 20,000 units of affordable housing will be built in their state.

The Prime Minister also promised a monorail service should Barisan Nasional regain Penang.

The announcement was greeted by loud cheers from the thousands gathered at Universiti Sains Malaysia to receive Najib, who was on a Promises Fulfilled Tour yesterday.

He said 10,000 units would be built soon by Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia (PR1MA) Berhad while the rest would be built by the Penang Regional Development Authority and government-linked companies JKP Sdn Bhd and Syarikat Perumahan Nasional Berhad.

"As the Government, we will fulfil this promise to the rakyat because we are bound by our word," he said when launching the nationwide online PR1MA registration yesterday.

"Register (online) for the PR1MA homes and we will conduct transparent and sincere balloting (for the units)."

Pledging that the homes would cost much less than the market price, Najib said: "If the market price is RM500,000, we will sell at RM300,000 to Penangites. This is my promise to all of you... (We are) not like Pakatan Rakyat that failed to fulfil its promise to the people of Kampung Buah Pala that their village would not be demolished.

"The state government has not built even a single low-cost house here (according to the Auditor General's Report 2010) so who can you trust Barisan or Pakatan?"

Najib added that the state's traffic congestion problem would be solved "if we are given the trust".

"Among the measures would be a monorail like the LRT in Kuala Lumpur.

"Penangites are entitled, deserve and should have good public transportation," he said.

Najib said he was planning more visits to the state as he had more announcements to make.

"There is so much more I want to do here," he added.

Unlike Pakatan, he said, Barisan had a proven track record of delivering its promises.

He said a vote for Pakatan was a vote for disunity, personal glory and an uncertain future while a vote for Barisan would ensure progress for the country.
