The Justice Department announced that two Tucson men have been sentenced for their efforts to join the ISIS terrorist organization.
27-year-old Ahmed Mahad Mohamed and 26-year-old Abdi Yemeni Hussein are both citizens of Somalia who were living in Tucson at the time of the offense.
They eventually pleaded guilty to conspiracy to provide material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization….
The judge also ordered both men be removed from the United States to Somalia following their sentences.
The Justice Department says, from late 2018 or early 2019 until their arrest in July 2019, Mohamed and Hussein conspired to travel to Egypt to fight for ISIS in the Sinai Peninsula.
Mohamed was also accused of trying to recruit other ISIS supporters online and stated that he wanted to travel to ISIS-controlled territory to become “the beheading guy” and martyr himself….
On the morning of July 26, 2019, the defendants checked in for their flight at the Tucson International Airport, went through security, and walked to the departure gate.
Mohamed was carrying approximately $10,000 that he and Hussein planned to use for travel expenses and to buy firearms.
