Two lawyers charged some $566,000 when a court-based assessment showed that the amount should be $170,000.
Though they said an agreement with their clients pegged the fee to an estate's assets whose worth rose over the years, a disciplinary tribunal said the charges should be fair and for the work done.
Mr Ang Chin Peng and Mr Martin Decruz, lawyers of more than 18 years, will now have to face a Court of Three Judges for gross professional misconduct. Both were partners of law firm ALD LLP which dissolved in 2010. The complaints were filed by a grandson of Mr Quek Seng Kee and Madam Leong Siew Fong whose estates were the subject of the work.
The tribunal, comprising Senior Counsel Cavinder Bull and Supreme Court Deputy Registrar Teh Hwee Hwee, recommended that the duo be referred to the apex court for dealing with errant lawyers.
