SINGAPORE: From 1959 to 1990, 2,460 arrests were made under Singapore's Public Security Ordinance and Internal Security Act (ISA). Of these, 1,045 persons were detained.
In a written parliamentary reply to NCMP Lina Chiam's question on arrests and detentions under the ISA, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Teo Chee Hean said those arrested were involved in communist-related activities to overthrow the government.
They also participated in racial and religious extremism, foreign subversion and espionage and terrorism.
The government said many of the individuals and their families have carried on with their lives over the decades. It also will not be releasing specific identities of the persons arrested and detained.
