The original inhabitants of South China are the Baiyue people - Nan Yue in Guangdong and Min Yue in Fujian. Han Chinese started arriving to the southern regions two thousand years ago. The Han settlers intermixed with the Natives and over many centuries developed their own language (not Mandarin) and custom which became very different from those in North/Central China. As for the Teochew people, they are late comers like the Hakka people. When they arrive in the south, they settled down in southern Fujian and adopted the language and custom of the Min Nan people. They later moved again as a group to the Shantou region in eastern Guangdong.
