18 years' jail, 15 strokes of the cane for paedophile

SINGAPORE: He would stalk arcades or playgrounds where boys would hang out during the school holidays and then lure them with food and drinks to quiet and secluded spots.
38-year-old cleaner, Azmanshah Zailamshah, would then perform oral and anal sex on them.
He committed such offences on seven boys, who're between 11 and 13 years old.
For that, Azmanshah was sentenced to 18 years' jail and 15 strokes of the cane.
Azmanshah, who has been diagnosed with paedophilia, faced a total of 16 charges.
The court proceeded with seven charges, including underage sex and punching a police officer.
The rest were taken into consideration during sentencing.
Between 2009 and 2011, Azmanshah befriended the boys at arcades in shopping centres.
He would cajole his victims with gifts, including mobile phones and a bicycle.
He then brought them to areas, such as basement carparks, where he would expose himself and perform sexual acts on the boys.
He also brought them to the beach to swim and preyed on them when they were washing up.
The prosecution described Azmanshah as "relentless in his sexual assaults" against his victims.
Azmanshah was also said to be "highly resourceful and clever in gaining access to different children and getting them to comply with his demands".
He was arrested in June last year by police officers on patrol at a shopping mall after he was spotted entering the stairwell with a boy.
The officers followed them and caught him bare-chested with the boy wearing only his underwear.
Azmanshah suddenly lunged towards police officer Chong Tian Jie and punched him several times.
In his sentencing, District Judge Chay Yuen Fatt noted that Azmanshah was a repeat offender who had a "relatively high chance of re-offending".
He added that the offences were "calculated and pre-mediated" as Azmanshah "built trust and brought down the boys' guard".
The court also heard that Azmanshah has previous convictions for carnal connection.
