SINGAPORE: Police have arrested 18 people -- nine men and nine women between the ages of 35 and 77 -- suspected of gambling.

Police said on Thursday that they were caught between 2.45pm and 11.45pm on July 17 during a raid of two units in Neil Road and Pagoda Street.

Fifteen suspects were caught playing mahjong and gin rummy games, using tiles with coloured chips as stakes. Three other suspects, believed to be managing the gambling dens, were also present.

Gambling items, such as mahjong tiles, cards and dice, and about S$1,600 in cash were seized.

Fifteen of the suspects will be charged in court on Friday for Gaming in a Common Gaming House.

Investigations against the other three suspects are ongoing.
