16 drink-drivers caught in early morning operation
By S Ramesh | Posted: 06 October 2011 2053 hrs

SINGAPORE: 16 drink-drivers were caught in a four-and-a-half-hour islandwide operation early Thursday morning.

The operation, which ended at 4.30am, saw road blocks being set up along Ganges Avenue, Zion Road, Havelock Road and Outram Road.

Traffic Police administered the breathalyser test to 73 motorists. 15 men and one woman, aged between 32 and 62, failed the test and were arrested.

The highest breathalyser result clocked was 75 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, more than twice the prescribed legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

Commander of Traffic Police, Assistant Commissioner Cheang Keng Keong, issued a stern reminder to potential drink-drivers. He said: "Drink-drivers face serious punishment from the law.

"They not only stand to lose their driving licence but can also be liable for a jail term or even caning should death or serious injury be caused. So do not take the risk by drink-driving and endanger the lives of others."
