16,000 girls below 15 are married
KUALA LUMPUR: Some 16,000 girls aged below 15 in the country are married. Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Heng Seai Kie, who revealed the figure yesterday, said most of them were from Sabah and Sarawak. There were also Chinese girls who got married because they were pregnant, she said when replying to questions at the Wanita AGM here yesterday. She said the ministry was also against the setting up of the School of Hope for pregnant teenagers in Malacca. Heng added that under the ministry there were 60 centres to cater to the needs of unwed mothers, apart from 100 different units under the welfare departments. Heng said the ministry was also working with non-governmental organisations to organise sex education seminars. She added that many parents did not know how to give proper sex education to their children.
