<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->Contributors to socio-political website The Online Citizen (TOC) yesterday urged Singaporeans to request more details on the exposure of their town councils to troubled structured products.
About 100 pre-written letters were distributed to the 250 people who attended the website's second anniversary celebration at the Speakers' Corner at Hong Lim Park.
The two-page letters, which Singaporeans are asked to sign and mail out, are addressed to the town councils' chairmen, seeking from them full transparency and a complete accounting of all investments made.
The letters request for information in nine areas - among them the performance of investments over the past three years, records of deliberations on investment decisions and what actions the councils intend to take.
The letters were based on a template of queries that had been published on the TOC website since Nov 25. About 27 people have e-mailed their town councils based on the template so far, said TOC's editor-in-chief, Mr Choo Zheng Xi.
Seven of them have received replies from their town councils. Two of the responses - one came directly from West Coast GRC MP Arthur Fong - have been 'fairly comprehensive', while five 'made cursory references to their town councils' financial statements', Mr Choo disclosed. 'Many people expressed frustration on town council investments on our website, but they didn't know how to feedback their concerns to their MPs. We put the letter together to facilitate the process,' he said.
