Old Lyon ("vieux" is French for old) has attractions that help it catch up with the city's newer districts. This part of Lyon has a high concentration of UNESCO World Heritage sites, among which is the Temple du Change. This elaborately-designed building, whose facade is lined with Roman arches, resembles more a small opera house than a center of commerce. Yet back when it was first used in 1653, it functioned as the first building of the Lyon Stock Exchange. Other interesting places to see in the city's "good old district" include the "traboules." These narrow passageways were built in the 4th century so merchants could travel throughout the city unseen. Some of these secret paths are filled with beautiful courtyards and gardens, making them an ideal urban escape even for regular old travelers.
