15,000 needy get vouchers
By Aaron Low
CHOCOLATES and soft drinks are Mr Ravi Packery Kuppusamy's weakness.
But such sweet treats are rare for the cleaner, who struggles to support his family of five on an income of $1,000 a month.
He often has to ask his Marine Parade GRC MP Seah Kian Peng for financial aid.
The news that he would be receiving extra help in the form of NTUC FairPrice supermarket shopping vouchers brought the 47-year-old some cheer.
His family is one of 15,000 who will benefit from $1.5 million in shopping vouchers from the NTUC FairPrice Foundation, a charity set up last year by the the labour movement's retail social enterprise.
Grassroots organisations across Singapore will distribute the vouchers to needy families hit by the economic recession.
On Saturday, at a National Day dinner in Braddell Heights, Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong received the money on behalf of the grassroots organisations, from NTUC FairPrice Foundation's chairman Ng Ser Miang.
Mr Seah, the ward's MP, also took the opportunity to update his constituents on plans to develop a new shopping and transport hub at Serangoon Central.
It will house a mega shopping mall, a 16-bus bay interchange and the Serangoon and new Circle Line MRT stations.
