SHAH ALAM - A 13-year-old faked his own kidnapping in an attempt to scam RM100,000 (S$40,000) in ransom money from his parents.
However, his ruse fell apart when police found him hiding in his friend's house, hours later.
Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Mohd Adnan Abdullah said the incident occurred at around 7.30am on Friday when the boy's father realised that the teenager as well as his car were missing.
"He found a note saying that he would have to pay RM100,000 if he wanted to see his son again," he told a press conference here yesterday.
The boy's father also found RM5,000 missing.
However, police only took half a day to locate the boy with two friends, aged 13 and 15, at a friend's house in Selayang.
"We found the car parked at a shopping mall. We also found some of the cash, part of which was used by the boy to buy three bicycles for himself and his two friends," said SAC Mohd Adnan.
He said all three teenagers had their statement taken and the boy was released on bail.
"We will wait for the Deputy Public Prosecutor to decide on the next course of action," he said.
