SINGAPORE: Police have arrested 13 suspects for alleged involvement in loansharking activities in two separate operations.
In the first case, an eight-hour islandwide operation including simultaneous raids was conducted on Thursday against loansharking activities in Henderson, Jurong East, Woodlands, Choa Chu Kang, Yishun, Toa Payoh, Bedok and Tampines.
It led to the arrest of 10 men and a woman, all aged between 29 and 52.
Preliminary investigations showed the suspects opened bank accounts and gave their Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards and Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) to loansharking syndicates to facilitate the business of unlicensed moneylending.
In the second operation, police arrested two men, aged 36 and 46, in the vicinity of Sembawang Central.
They were spotted behaving suspiciously and a check found loanshark-related paraphernalia, including mobile phones believed to contain debtors records, ATM cards and bank transaction receipts.
Preliminary investigation revealed the men were involved in monetary transactions using ATM cards on behalf of unlicensed moneylenders.
