10 years' jail for robbery and molest
PETALING JAYA: A cement factory worker was sentenced to a total of 10 years' jail and four strokes of the rotan by two courts here yesterday after he pleaded guilty to robbing and molesting a woman in a car- park of a shopping complex in Damansara last year.
Rivinder Singh, 41, was jailed for eight years and ordered to be given three strokes of the rotan by the Sessions Court for robbing the 26-year-old victim of her car and belongings, including a wallet and MyKad, while armed with a knife at the basement carpark of The Curve Mutiara Damansara here at 5.15pm on May 27 last year.
Rivinder, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency from Judge Abu Bakar Manat, saying that he had two school-going children to support. Deputy public prosecutor Zhafran Rahim Hamzah pressed for a deterrent sentence because Rivinder had a previous conviction.
In the magistrate's court, Magistrate Surya Wati Shawal sentenced Rivinder to two years' jail and one stroke of the rotan for molesting the woman by lifting her skirt at the same place and time.
The court was told that Rivinder, who had driven off with the woman in her car, had molested her but she managed to jump out when the car stopped at a traffic-light junction near the shopping complex.
Deputy public prosecutor Wan Mohd Bukhari Wan Mohd appeared for the prosecution. The two sentences are to run concurrently from Rivinder's date of arrest on April 4. Bernama
